Why Dear Therapy exists

People deserve a room where they can stop performing.

Dear Therapy was created around a simple belief: people deserve a counselling space where they can be honest without being reduced to a diagnosis, rushed through a process or expected to perform wellness.

Many of the people who reach out look capable from the outside. They are managing a job, a relationship or a family — and privately feeling anxious, low, disconnected or stuck. You don’t need a crisis or the right vocabulary to begin.

In practice, that means you decide how much to share and when, goals are agreed together and revisited, and you are asked what is and isn’t helping. Your culture, identity, faith and family context are treated as part of the conversation, not a side note.

Your counsellor

The person you’ll actually be sitting with.

Mandeep Virk, MA, RCC, clinical counsellor at Dear Therapy in Vancouver

Mandeep Virk, MA, RCC

Warm, direct and collaborative.

Mandeep Virk is a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) and a member of the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors. She works with individuals and couples, in person in Vancouver and online. Her role is not to tell you who to become; it is to help you see your situation clearly enough to make your own choices.

Mandeep is currently the only counsellor at Dear Therapy, so the person you speak with on the free consultation call is the person you would see for sessions.

What we believe

How those values show up in sessions

01

You don’t need to arrive composed

You can come in unsure what to say. A session can start with whatever feels most pressing that week.

02

You make the decisions

Mandeep won’t tell you what to choose. She asks questions and reflects back what she hears, so you can weigh your options.

03

We look at what already helps

Alongside what is getting in the way, sessions look at what has helped you cope so far, and how to build on it.

04

Reflection, strategies or both

Some appointments focus on understanding; others include a practical step to try before next time. You can say which is more useful.

we value  ·  safety  ·  honesty  ·  going at your pace

What you can expect

Clear, respectful care from the first conversation.

Your counsellor should explain how therapy works, invite questions and make room for feedback. Here is what that looks like in practice.

  • Informed consent

How sessions work, what approaches may be used and why — explained before you begin, and revisited as you go.

  • Confidentiality, explained

What you share stays private within legal and ethical limits, which are walked through plainly in your first session.

  • A plan that evolves

Goals are shaped together and revisited as the work develops, rather than fixed on day one.

  • Room for feedback

If something isn’t working, you’re invited to say so — and it will be taken seriously.

  • Your pace

You don’t have to tell your whole story at once, and you can say no to any question.

  • Every background welcome

Clients of every gender, orientation, faith, body and background are welcome.

How we work

Adapted to the person, not a set method.

Mandeep draws on more than one approach and chooses what suits the person in front of her, rather than applying one method to everyone. She explains what she is suggesting and why, and you can ask questions at any point.

Understanding a moment

Slowing down a specific situation to look at the thoughts, feelings and reactions involved.

Practical strategies

Trying a specific change between appointments, when that is useful to you.

Relationships and history

Looking at how past and present relationships shape what is happening now, where that helps.

Trauma-informed throughout

Consent and safety come before detail. You are never pushed to revisit more than you choose.

About the practice

Questions about Dear Therapy, answered.

More on the full FAQ page.

Will I see the same counsellor every time?

Yes. Mandeep Virk is currently the only counsellor at Dear Therapy, so she is the person you speak with on the free consultation call and the person you would see for sessions.

What is the free 15-minute call for?

Practical questions: what you’re hoping to work on, how sessions run and whether this is the right place to start. It isn’t a counselling session, and there is no obligation to continue.

Do I need a referral or a diagnosis?

No diagnosis is needed to start counselling. Some extended health plans have their own referral requirements, so it’s worth checking yours — see fees and insurance.

Where are sessions held?

In person at 8765 Cambie St., Vancouver, BC V6P 3J9, or online by secure video for clients in Vancouver. If you live elsewhere, ask about your location during the free call.
