Online vs In-Person Counselling: Which Fits You?

When you weigh online vs in-person counselling, the better format is not the one that sounds most serious. It is the one that is clinically appropriate, private enough and realistic enough for you to attend consistently.

Online counselling may fit when…

You have a demanding schedule, manage mobility or caregiving barriers, find the trip to an office hard to fit in, or feel more at ease speaking from somewhere familiar. It removes travel but requires a reliable connection and a room where you can talk without being overheard.

In-person counselling may fit when…

You value physical separation from home, have limited privacy, find screens tiring or prefer the cues and ritual of sharing a room. Travel is part of the decision, so consider how easily you can get to the office each time.

Think about the work, not only convenience

Some clinical or safety needs may affect whether online or in-person counselling is appropriate. Your therapist should discuss location, emergency planning and whether online service is permitted where you are physically located. The choice can also change over time when circumstances and treatment needs change.

How the two formats work at Dear Therapy

Mandeep Virk, MA, a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC), sees clients in Vancouver in person and online by secure video. If you are somewhere else, ask about your location during the free call. Online sessions use a secure video platform; she explains how it works and its privacy limits before your first online session.

Both formats, and the free 15-minute consultation, are booked through Jane. Many people use both formats; if you think you may want to switch between them, raise it during the free call.

Online or in-person counselling: questions to ask yourself

  • Where can I speak most privately?
  • Which format can I attend reliably?
  • Do I feel able to stay present on video?
  • Are there safety or technology concerns to discuss?
